STRONG (HON-NON-DE-UH) The Seneca chief sends a handwritten report to a United States Indian Agent concerning the population, agricultural production and livestock of his people, concluding that the figures show "the progress of the Indians toward civilization." Autograph Document signed: "N. T. Strong", 2 pages (front and verso), 15x9¼. Cattaraugus Reservation, near Irving, New York, 1848 September 16. To R. H. Shankland, US Agent of Indian Affairs, Ellicattville, New York. Addressed on verso. In part: "We have no correct data for this year for the necessary Statistics of the New York Indians. Indeed, we have not had since the Report of H. R. Schoolcarft, Esq. to the legislature of the State of New York in 1846." Strong then summarizes the data from 1846 on Seneca population, by Reservation, the most numerous being 808 at Cattaraugus; the agricultural acreage; the production of wheat, corn, potatoes and oats in bushels; the number of horses, sheep and cows; and the estimated value of the land. Strong concludes with an optimistic assessment: "The improvement of the land and the raising of grain and stock are increasing, and I venture to say, that there are more land cultivated and that more grain will be raised this year, than any former period in the history of the New York Indians. I have selected the few, but the most important items I think to show the progress of the Indians towards Civilization, so far as the cultivation of land is concerned. ..." Nathaniel T. Strong (1810-1872), whose original Seneca name was Hon-Non-De-Uh, was a hereditary chief of a clan of Seneca Indians, a member nation of the Iroquois League. Strong graduated from Yale and read law at a firm in Buffalo, N.Y.
